world of Alfred Browning [Music] [Music] Parker and this is what describes who Alfred is is purpose while we were talking I kept on looking for this one passage CU I think it's so important by their work you shall them remember the biblical injunction how to select an architect what should you say to your architect you will probably think of Plenty but if you prefer simple admonitions might quote these first principles build strongly [Music] [Applause] build as directly as possible with no complication use the materials at hand and keep keep these as few as you [Music] can let your building love its sight and glorify its climate and finally design for use make it [Music] beautiful February 5th 1939 Mr Wright this is my last year at the University of Florida embarking upon an architectural career is rapidly becoming a strangely thrilling and sometimes frightening experience naturally I wonder where my place is and what my contribution will ultimately be I do have a passionate desire to accomplish something worthwhile truly your life and work has been an inspiration in my thoughts these few weeks past not in a sense of imitation en joyed a few contacts with what you have done and are doing but in thinking that I must do my utmost to live to the best that is within me Frank Lloyd Wright revered nature her example inspired him and led to his understanding of the interconnectedness of Life a sense of the organic is indispensable there is no source so fertile so so suggestive so helpful aesthetically for the architect as a comprehension of natural law your pictures your house is a crude but good beginning and of course I think you are on the right track because it leads to tesen we would be se e you and talk with you sincerely Frank Lloyd Wright May 23rd 1944 my name is uh Martha Milan but I was Mrs Alfred Browning Parker when uh when I first married the biggest influence on Alfred was Frank lyd Wright Mr Wright wanted Alfred to come to tally Essen he had Tas in East and Tas and West and divided a year between the two places and he had these young architects who followed him and lived with him in these two places Dear Mr Wright you are right the track does lead to tesen may we come to tesen as soon as this war is over and I am released from the Navy more lett exchanged and boxes of mangoes melons and lime sent from Parker to WR mangoes are in season now and within the week I shall send you a small box of Ha Saigon variety dear Parker you know my weakness how delicious a mango is someday we will be seeing The Parkers by the end of the war though Parker had changed his mind about moving to tesen his family and his career were well on their way Alfred wanted to be to design his own work Mr Wright was very nice when Alfred said no I'm sorry I want to open my practice down here Mr Wright accepted it graciously in the 1940s 50s and 60s editor Elizabeth Gordon molded house beautiful magazine into a beacon for modernism championing the organic style Advanced by Frank Lloyd Wright when Gordon saw the new Parker family home under construction in Miami in 1951 she recognized a quality and talent and well before its completion she was committed to publishing it her to Parker praised his efforts your house is a masterpiece as great as anything I've seen on any continent you must not wait long to have it published for it can make you a designer stature and I will go to Great to help you with the Furnishings by begging and borrowing what I ne superb pictures we must begin th is at once we'll be home on Thursday glad I know you Elizabeth Gordon and Frank Lloyd rright was similarly impressed with the Parker family's new Coconut Grove home editor Gordon chose it as the 1954 pay Setter and the master architect volunteered to write an introduction for the magazine this Florida house aims at the highest goal to which architecture May Aspire organic architecture along this new but ancient way a home where the enlightened mind can flower where people can develop their fullest potentials is still a possibility Frank Lloyd Wright wr's introduction to the PACE Setter says that this is a Timeless way of building and so he saw that Parker had a lot of talent and that he was continuing this organic line that Frank lri himself had pioneered and right paid Parker the highest compliment he actually called the house organic which was very significant for him for Frankl Wright to attach this label to someone else's work [Music] I would say my favorite is the home down the Royal Road cuz I grew up there it was a beautiful home it was a marvelous life as a child growing up byland biscane Bay in Coconut Grove and freedom that we had enjoyment of the water and the home so I would have save all the homes that was my favorite the Royal Road House was the most fun it was such an effortless house for us kids to grow up in I even knew it as a kid that it was an exciting house I understood the angles the attention to detail and tile on the roof above and being able to have my dad a little office on the top of the house ju st a really wonderful house I think we all of us appreciated how cool of a house it was the railroad house was the perfect to grow up in because it was open spaces I guess I wasn't even in the first grade when we moved there and I lived there through um my high school years it was right on bis g bay it was on the water we had a sailboat so of course we had lots of activities on the water he's an architect then with a 10- fingered grasp on reality he is representative of the genius is no other word of America which is in our mechanics and our inventors in William James and Thomas ederson John Dewey and Henry Ford it's in their fingertips more than on the edge of their tongues theirs is an life as it is a welcoming of its variety and confusion an eagerness to take it into their hands and rework its substance our architects of this Spirit build like men who know the Earth who know the nature of of wood and stone and people that's the heart of the architecture of humanism it's architecture measured by man what it does to him and for him the life it encourages the horizons it opens the freedom it inspires the beauty it creates the awareness it arouses in man himself 20 October 1953 Dear Mr Wright you were swelled to write the forward to the presentation of my house and the current issue be autiful your words afford me th greatest thrill I find in the issue when your show is opened and just before or after your town hall appearance would you have a chance to talk I'll come t New York whenever you say soon after the success of the 1954 paay Setter editor Gordon arranged a luncheon in New York for herself and Joseph Barry executiv editor of house beautiful and Frank Lloyd Wright and Alfred Browning [Music] Parker we were living in the Royal Road House and Alfred told me we're not going to build any more houses he had an awful lot of work to do for other people my interest really kind of fell out of with the marriage because I loved that building just loved it he had very conscientious about all these mouths to feed he insisted on saving about 50% of his income due to the fact that architecture as a profession is is not stable we had disagreements over how much money we saved we made married I think it was about 13 years and we went once to hear Mr Wright speak that was the only trip I moved to Europe I took the children to Europe and he'd come to Europe to get the chil the children would go back and forth 17 March 1956 Dear Mrs Wright thank you for your gracious letter your visit was a high spot for me of the past year these past few months have been trying ones so please forgive my delay in answering your invitation to visit tales Ma rtha Parker will not be coming with me in fact our divorce was final this month his reputation grew and in January 1959 Parker's architectural colleagues honored him with a nomination to the American Institute of Architects t become a fellow the AIA requires a body of work recognized as influential both nationally and internationally the fellowship to a select 3 and a half% of the aia's 92,000 members for Alfred Browning Parker's nomination letters of recommendation were received along with an impressive telegram from Spring Green Wisconsin January 31st 1959 attention jury of fellows Alfred Browning Parker's work seems to me worthy of encouragement I should be happy to see him recognized and believe he would deserve what you propose to confirm upon Him Frank Lloyd Wright the Parker family home in Gables Estates Florida was the fifth of 10 homes Parker designed for his family and the last in Elizabeth Gordon's pacter series 1965 also marked the end of ca reer at house beautiful celebrating her tenure architect Parker wrote of editor Gordon her contribution to the dissemination of information about our profession has been both discriminating and effective her insight into the nature of architecture and her ability to explain these insights with photographs drawings and words will remain the Pinnacle of editing in the magazine field in this final Pace Setter Parker achieved new levels of excellence and [Music] elegance as owner designer and [M usic] he constructed on a grand scale with lavish interiors and Landscaping and as always with consideration of sight and climate in his own words he describes the main environmental feature of the house the Seaway a sight on the edge of a bay and ocean is likely to receive the highest water and greatest wind building a house to resist possible hurricanes is essential no matter how infrequent the occurrence the principal rooms are raised off the ground leaving a wide Seaway through the center of the house if hurricane Waters rise they will be diverted by the angular forms of planting bins Terraces and supporti columns passing through the Seaway water can flow across the arrival court and through openings in the rear cardboard the prow likee forms of of the central stairway and the exterior doors st udy guest room will split hurricane winds and Waters into manageable Furies this house reflected Parker's growing status as an architect and an exuberance perhaps inspired by his new wife and daughter my mother was amazing she was an intelligent strong woman she was a model when my father met her my siblings introduced my father to her she entered into an already made family I know that though today my siblings love and remember my mother as if she were their biological mother I'm sure that they would also admit when she first came in that there was sp they and room they had to to create and accommodate for this other woman coming into the home and my mother did that with Grace and won the hearts of my brothers and and my sisters my mother uh was diagnosed with cancer when I was three she survived with years and then she died on July 29th 1971 I think Wright's argument and Elizabeth Gordon's argument Alfred Browning Parker's argument a lot of the other Pac Setter Architects would say that these principles are Timeless we should always build with regard to our site and our climate and use materials sensibly use materials that are going to last we should always inject human warmth into the design it should always be livable for the person who is going to be dwelling in this [Music] residence South Florida's long been an attraction for the Sun and sea for wildlife and night life and for the arts and culture in the early 60s Miami was booming new technology and new industry provided opportunity Millions came from across the country and around the world they came for something new the Miami heral came out on a Sunday edition with a color picture of some size of the whole model that I presented to the city commission and I think that's very unusual that the big paper like the Miami Herold takes their front page on the Sunday news and puts dow architectural situation Miami Miami Marina Marina mayam Marina mayami Marina when Dad developed myam Marina I know that the city council or critics said oh we can't have large glass expanses because the uh stor the hurricanes have come through here will destroy this well all t do is go out there with a fire department truck and a b and show them how his hydrodynamic shape will just disperse the water and that stop the [Mus critics in general today I attempted to dispel many of the rumors that have been going around concerning mayam Marina rumors about danger and about obsolescence and in my opinion these charges are not founded the greatest thing that has worried me before and worries me now about mayam Marina is the problem of vandalism we h step in the development of our city and the vandalism problem still exists in that beautiful spot of mayam [Music] Marina we want to present this to you congrat ulations it's really wonderful we love having this building is such a remarkably fine building that any City would be proud to have it I am very hopeful that it will serve as a forerunner for many more buildings to come in Miami of this quality and I'm delighted that we were fortunate enough to have this kind of architecture built by public fund enir architecture does change and the appearance of these structures change we always assume that when we build a certain building in the structure that here's its defined purpose on perpetuity well that simply isn't true architecture is just as much a breathing living organism as we are and if we had a time lapse photography of looking down on a city how mayam Marina a yach harbor becomes a disco and from a disco the Hard Rock Cafe and from the Hard Rock Cafe there's this whole Bayfront development that people go and eat an drink and dance and I think that we we have to look at architecture as something that is transient there was one particular restaurant called reflection on the Bayside that was my favorite I didn't know all but whenever my family came or my friends came from Greece or from Ethiopia I always loved taking them there because of the view and because of the way the restaurant was but I had no idea that uh he was the one who designed of course I do read about Al on my he was always on the art section but I had no idea that somehow we going to meet on my first day he took me to a restaurant here I am in a restaurant eating and admiring the place and he wouldn't say anything that he designed it when we were leaving in the en the evening I turned around and I looked the plaque on in the elevator on the wall and it says Alfred Bown in park go is it the same person who decided it has to be so I turned around and I asked him and he said yes I said it's amazing CU this is one of my favorite place in Miami and I've been coming here since I came to [Music] Miami the office of Alfred brownie Parker architect designed and built scores of banks for multiple clients throughout South Florida and the keys from the mid 1950s through the 1970s the Flagler Federal Savings and Loan Association was a reliable repeat client Parker's pagota project for the banks headquarters in downtown Miami is from 1960 a sign of t structure included a parking deck with heliport above and a basement bo mb shelter below the design was published in the Miami News and the Miami Herald only to have the bank decide in favor of something less daring nevertheless the news was spreading about the architect of the Magic [Music] City [Music] the North Miami Beach Branch was designed in 1969 the unique curved linear structure is an impressive example of both organic architecture and integrated design making all parts fit the whole the facade of floor to sealing glass creates a dramatic yet Warm Glow In Light fill Lobby clearer stories and skylights bring daylight deep into interior [Music] spaces modern Furnishings by Herman Miller and modern conveniences such as a drive-in teller inspired the client and Bank customers alike with the optimism and confidence of the [Music] age design a space which strengthens Community our bond with each other facilitates communication so each of us feel feels a part of the Sacred action all with a feeling of intimacy that special sense of the Sacred and divine Reverend David G Russell Pastor St Louis [Music] Church the building is I believe beautiful the large ribs remind one of the ribs in a boat Peter's bark some with a glint in their eye have said that the exterior resembles a spaceship perhaps there is something very significant and valid in that we are on a journey to the Lord the space is within [Music] Jesus had an eye for b balance and form he was a carpenter a maker of things I like to think that this structure pleases him God is beautiful ugly buildings lie about God I ask you to pray over this building May the Holy Spirit fill it when people are in it may he touch heal and he was the loc [Music] we used to see each other every year at a mutual neighbor's house then one year I was there by myself and Alfred wanted to know where my husband was and I told him I didn't know uh that was about it but he did call me a few days after that and that's how we started going out in a year we were married we were married four years Alfred marches to his own drama I guess I do too in October 1949 house beautiful magazine editor Elizabeth Gordon invited readers to enter a whole new world of Better Living and Better Health her climate control issue presented in specific technical terms and for all regions of the United States how to combine correctly all the technically fine and advanced products of the Building Trades to produce a perfect house for the place in which it was to be built so we went down there and we walked around this site it's full of trees and I said Dad uh where are we going to build the house and they says well that's that's part of the design challenge as we walked through there we found these three little clearings and I was standing there looking at the clearings and then I'd look at da could see how he was visualizing things that whole afternoon he had designed the house for the site I'm certain of [Music this by separating a house into three separate pods and connecting these pods with a 88t x6t long pool and because the site had a well on it using the well water as Pool Water by having the challenge that was sight specific he really created something that was ingenious in [Music] design [Music] called as classic and aarong as a Picasso Masterpiece Wood song Fits the canvas of the site with daring and Dazzle blending indoor elegance and outdoor [Music] splendor one of Parker's Master works it is an expression and continuation of its tropical [Music] environment the home has been published widely and honored often in 2006 English design and architecture magazine wallpaper named Wood song one of their 10 best homes in the [Music] world [Music] Parker's Vermont home commonly known as Wind song it's certainly no homes he did in South Florida it's obviously designed for the climate and for the environment it sits in which is C and Mr Parker's work Wind Song is actually set in to the hill there's a lot of passive and active responses to solar and Alternate methods and sources at that house it was designed actually to as an experime think it was done in the 70s at that time that was a big thing in architecture of course Mr Park career started from day one very concerned and respectful of the of the climate of the environment the it self the form I think is a result o of the interior and the structural components of the house so it's not like a style statement certainly it's a a a statement of form FS function the sighting of the home is oriented for Passive solar light and heat and to benefit from the Magnificent views of the Green Mountains the back of the home is literally tucked into the hillside allowing the Earth to heat in Winter and cool in summer the curves of the footprint Echo The Contours of the land copper sheathing exposed structural beams a massive centrally located stone fireplace and a Southern Wall of glass are the structural elements and natural materials chosen for strength and resilience as well as warmth and Beauty Parker's Wind Song is a tour to force of organic architecture and integrated design and a perfect house for Lincoln [Music] Vermont Derek and I were very SE is a wonderful wonderful brother he was born in 43 very tall uh very goodlooking very handsome he was very personable he was fun and had a fabulous sense of humor I mean just um his wit was very sharp he was a pilot and he liked t yeah he could say anything he wanted and get away with it he's just one of those people and so it was always a wi th him he was sick for years but we didn't know about it until probably the last couple of years after Alfred and I were married he was worried about Derek it was we were probably married about a year he had a bad cold and he couldn't shake it and um had swollen glands and they didn't know what was causing it and that was the first hint of his being ill and that went on for a long long time Derek passed away in 91 and he died of AIDS and uh Dad was right there with him for months and months my father in the last few months was there by my brother's side a lot the link between organic architecture and alternative energy is the [Music] environment Dr John C gford the distinguished Florida naturalist was Parker's father-in-law and a major early influence do not think that conservation saving and hoarding things conservation means sane use Dr John C gford since coming to Florida I been designing and building Bungalows all the while striving to produce something perfectly adapted to the environment with wood Stone lime sand and water all off the very lot you are building on the house becomes in truth a product of the [Music] land Dr gford was professor of tropical Forestry at the University of Miami from 1935 until his death in 1949 the University's Arboretum is named in his honor conservation is a kind of philosophy of living it fights for those things which will benefit the greatest number of the present and the coming Generations it is unselfish its main aim is the preservation and the maintenance of the General Public Welfare by the 1960s Parker's architecture office was thriving he was in demand as a speaker discussing topics of public concern and relevance intelligent and charismatic he was often quoted and written about in the press the cruts of this distinguished architect's thought about his hometown which he loves is that we must somehow achieve some kind of harmonious relationship to our land our environment our climate our fellow citizens he raised this idea out in all directions to cover the relationship of man to his State country continent the planet and all the space roundabout Doris Reno Miami Herald 1967 while laying on a strong plea for conservation of all natural resources Alfred Browning Parker last night declared that for our own Survival we must share life not destroy it Morris McLemore Miami News 1969 4 years after Parker's share life lecture the oil crisis and the OPEC oil embargo shook America and the world the OPEC oil crisis coincided with the rise of postmodernist design Parker's architecture practice was very successful but architectural tastes began to change I think that's something about Alfred is that he's very driven th ings better and to improve things and whether it's something as personal as someone's living space or as broad as the way we harness energy he always knows that people can do better in the' 70s there was some sort of very uncertain times with the oil embargos it became clear that it's not a good thing to be dependent on fossil fuels from foreign location there's an amount of security in being able to produce everything that you need to consume wh a country's economic well-being dependent upon foreign resources the fact that we pollute our environment terribly in utilizing these reso and that they're not recyclable are three characteristics that just runs against my father's nature so he would do whatever he can to correct this error he had some ideas and he had some friends who had some ideas and he said you know let's just not sit on our butts doing what we're doing let's do a little bit more I think that's initiated some of the work on horsin solo energy the solar reactor Technologies Group of stero form a genius at architecture and the creative voice he showed me a truly successful life with family and friends always embracing new sources of inspiration and the best project was always the next one on the [Music] horizon what would you do if you were the architect to redesign [Music] Center I think that the World Trade Center replacement project that my dad has designed is probably the best big project he's ever done and it's probably the most exciting thing I've ever seen by any architect anywhere ever it literally takes the World Trade Center site stretches it over the Hudson all the way out towards Ellis Island be so great because it would free up that part of Manhattan it would allow the sights of the two towers to be a Park area and a memorial it would really just make the skyline and all the approach to New York you'd see this wonderful inspired Tower and then this enormous Causeway Bridge going across connecting New Jersey and New York it's too bad it really wasn't more considered by New York I got thinking about it and I remembered the pon Veo which is in Florence and I knew about the Paco not because I've been there but my history books and all and also because I book bonderer in Miami by the name of cheni he and his family his father and his grandfather his great-grandfather his great great grandfather they all lived on Pono and they had a book binding shop there and they lived there and worked there and people were still doing it since the time that thing was built hundreds of years ago so I boy why not a modernday pointy Veo going from New York to New Jersey and people live on it so I did a bridge and I modified it then I did a building and I hung a bridge down below so you can get traffic back and forth it's only a mile and a half from Jersey over to New York and at one end I had a Marina and I had a Super Dome to house a whole lot of people and then at the other end I had a first a Performing Art Center big like the Kennedy Center in Washington I had next a museum like the Metropolitan Museum I'm talking about really big and next I had a radio City mus Music Hall with Stage screen and all the works and next I had a shopping mall one of the biggest you ever saw in your life and this whole thing had 10 million squa ft on it the rest of it was devoted to housing where you'd live at home and you'd work at home and you use your computer to sell your goods to the world if you wanted to you'd work at home and then you didn't even need a car so that's my idea for the World Trade Center it's still a good idea st ill need a bridge and they stil to build it I remember the first time that I heard Professor Parker speak it wasn't with his voice but do his drawings so this house is called Yen's aisle it's on a beautiful site here see there's the land that's the water I've got over 2 Acres of property but two acres of i and I've only got 6 t0 of an acre of solid land he found this beautiful lot on the Coan and he uh fell in love is known for choosing the S before he would do homes as you come through here you see there's a found plan here's the floor plan it's got a it's got a big living room with all that stuff I have but it's only got two bedrooms the design is going to really uh show not only th comfortable not only that it's going to be spaces and Beauty but I believe that you're going to see everything from wherever you you are are uh facing and looking at it so looking at the nature and the and then the birds um he's known for that sh eet is the east and west elevation this facing the lake and I'm build platform so I can make a sculpture garden down underneath here and then the other side where you come in I can come in under Shelf to park here and go upsteps to get in here or I can park over here and go upsteps and I can walk into the house from the land here this is where the high part of the land so I don't even need stuff to get in th is patient and he named it yini and because we have a p and we are surrounded by the environment of Forestry yini of course is my name so that's how he named it and I was very happy this is where I'm going to meet with my class Saturday morning and I'm going to talk about what Martha has called three in one where the person is the designer or architect he is the Builder or contractor and he is the owner three in one [Applause] very everybody [Applause] [Music] y this is the dur rage house my parents art and Jane du rage chose Alfred brownie Parker to design it hello I'm Holly D rage we loved our Parker home it inspired so many things including this film perfect house Magic City the world of Alfred Browning Parker to us our house was n sentient matter it had a heart and a soul and eyes to see with and approvals and solicitudes and deep sympathies it was of us and we were in its confidence and lived in its Grace and the Peac its benedictions we never came home from an absence that its face did not light up and speak out in eloquent welcome and we could not enter it unmoved Mark Twain I think I had always had dreams of you know having a house built the way I wanted I've always been interested in interior design and in architecture then suddenly the magazine came and I just like this was the best I thought ever this is who I w house even though it seemed way out that article how to build the has cat in Florida he found all this free ma terials and he was a strong guy and did a lot of the work himself talking about the film we sent Mr Parker to show him the kind of area we were going to build no no no family we had the kids playing in the wood trying to get each one in so that you can see the age level emphasizing that we have very little money I mean like $35,000 and then it ended up down on the beach with the the fire and everybody's clicking their fingers with marshmallows and a few beach scenes to show that you were near water and it was a pretty area we had nothing nothing but but good contact and and positive moneys saving suggestions from the architect and the contractor Bill Rogers the contractor he kept saying I can't believe these plans they're so [Music] detailed he suggested we certain things ourselves all the pain painting and all the wood trim and stuf like that and then we cut other things and other things once you cut that down a bit it seems like well maybe it's [Music] doable the doors were very distinctive my mom had done the design for her and had them carved very pretty dogwood tree and the flowers kind of carved into these wooden doors I I remember going with my mom to the guy who was going to carve them she's showing this old Italian guy this picture that sh and he was really excited about it the stained glass was in the drawing up above here and he had said well you go to Italy someday and you'll buy we ll we didn't go to Italy we went Westberry and we took a cour stained glass we sta I saw these Franky WR stained glass panels and I thought oh gosh I bet those would fit in our window so I think the first one we bought eventually people bought them for us B and Ken or somebody outse we got him as Christmas presents once it was a wonderful house to me because it was really different from all the other houses around us it re ally great house for my mom because it was a really open house it was sort of like her personality really open it was a great place for parties she loved to have parties and uh had many parties in that space I remember distinctly telling him on his Christmas cards I had now discovered what were the three most beautiful buildings in the world s falling water in Pennsylvania and this house needless to say he was rather pleased with that evaluation we had visiting students from Nigeria Norway and North Carolina and family from from France and friends from in and out of town some staying for years Mom all the guests you had at this house all our exchange students and spouses and all who was the [Music] easiest of course Jane didn't that she loved them all we learned from them all it was alw [Music] adventure a 11 grandchildren brought new Love and spirit to the house and the house and the gr now wise and still new embrace them then let them go with the inheritance and Legacy of great architecture we're saying goodbye to three metal Lane if we look closely it says do revive [Music] 1962 to [Music] 2005 it's been a busy month all my brothers and sisters visiting to clean out the old home home for so many years the art and Jan do revage this house every minute I walk in it it gives me pleasure someday it'll I'm sure but I'll regret just a little bit when it goes it's an [Music] inspiration that's what good architecture exciting architecture really does it does your life that way his way of incorporating interior exterior architecture involving the whole interior design and furniture and just looking at every detail of design the way he has his use of local materi ties into the landscape and you know they're guaranteed to stand up agains the climate because they're fr area even his working dr works of art the way he enjoys life the way he projects himself into life and takes out of
