Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] hi Kid Vision kids today we are at a Day of the Dead Festival to find out more about Mexico it's an amazing Festival come with me let's find out the Day of the Dead is a happy celebration in Mexico where people remember their family members who have died they make colorful decorations share special treats and put out photos of their loved ones people paint their faces like pretty skeletons and have parades with music and dancing Mexico is right next door to the United States it's our neighbor to the South if you look at a map you can find Mexico between the United States and Central America surrounded by big oceans on both sides my first stop today is the face painting tent during the day of the dead people are painting to look like beautiful and colorful skulls this tradition is known as calaa makeup so today we're going to paint your face like a suar skull a very simple one but very pretty you got those beautiful flowers and those beautiful colors so the first thing that I do is I look at you and I see what you're wearing so of course I'm going to use these colors right here because they pop up of me sugar skulls are sweet colorful decorations made of sugar that look like beautiful skeleton faces people make these pretty SKS to remember and celebrate people in their family who have died they're a fun and special way to show love sugar skulls has nothing to do with anything dark or evil it's a celebration of life and if anybody ever gets a chance to go to Mexico during uh this time of the year the festivals the costumes the makeup the decorations it is absolutely incredible creating ofendes is Another Day of the Dead tradition ofendes are altars special tables that families make to honor their loved ones this is an altar that I made in Rememberance of uh my friend Leon McBride and this is my father he passed away a long time ago see how cute he was and this is my mother and my uncle so I wrote my dad my mom my uncle and my best friend so I put a lot of flowers because Flowers I how we welcome them and let them know that here we are you know when people passed away flowers are very very important so I put a lot of flowers for them all different colors cuz you wanted it to be colorful music is very important so people party they sing they play instruments they dance you're going to see it today at at the park and U also I forgot my candle here my candle that also important because you want to light them up so I have this ones that uh instead but I forgot my one here and uh and again you know just as many decorations as you want to put and make it as colorful as you want to put as you want to make it and and then just like I said just think about your friends and your love ones and talk to them and welcome them and say thank you for coming and I know that you're okay cuz they are okay you know and one day we'll be us in the pictures and it's okay too thank you so much somebody give you a hug oh thank [Music] you during the day of the dead people often do traditional folk dances each region of Mexico has its own special dance some dancers wear big colorful skirts that twirl around and around While others wear masks or hats or jingling Bells I love after learning a few new dance steps all the dancing made me hungry it's time for some tacos there's nothing like tacos to say Mexico tacos are yummy food from Mexico that are made with soft or crunchy tortillas a tortilla is a soft round flat bread made from corn or flour to make a taco fold the tortilla like a half moon and fill it with tasty things like meat cheese vegetables or beans it's okay if it gets a little messy that's part of the fun of eating tacos now it's time for the Day of the Dead parade with giant puppets have you ever seen a puppet as tall as a house these puppets need a lot of puppeteers [Music] I had so much fun marching in the parade with a dog puppet many of the giant puppets look like La Katrina A Day of the Dead character that looks like a beautiful skeleton lady dressed in colorful oldfashioned clothes with flowers on her head or a hat I had the best time at Day of the Dead Festival bye wow [Music]
